Teaching young people about careers in healthcare
High school children in Suffolk, VA, visited the Sentara Obici Hospital on Wednesday to experience first hand how working in a hospital really feels. They cut and sewed chicken breasts, saw ultrasound scans, and talked with hospital personnel about how to care for babies and identify sunburnt skin.
This event was organised by Rose Mary Jones, a healthcare occupations teacher, and students from three public schools participated. The students are all members of the Health Occupations Students of America organization or they have been in Jones' introduction to health occupations class.
The idea, Jones said, is to let young people know the variety of opportunities in the field besides the traditional ones for doctors or nurses. Healthcare professionals include nutritionists and physical and occupational therapists.
