New York health care budget focuses on preventive care
Gov. David A. Paterson announced a $131.8 billion budget on Sunday. The budget includes new taxes and money from the federal stimulus to close the deficit. While spending on health care has not been reduced, it is much less than some people had hoped.
Medicaid reimbursement rates have been revised, and more has been allocated to preventive community medicine than inpatient care. Preventive care is much less expensive than inpatient treatment. Officials said this would save hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
New York received $7.2 billion in federal stimulus money for the next fiscal year, and part of this has gone to programs like unemployment insurance and food stamps.
